How to Cut Acrylic with a Knife or Scriber
Cutting acrylic sheets up to 3/16″ thick can be done using a scribing method, similar to how window glass is cut. This technique is best for small, straight cuts and works well for quick DIY projects.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Keep the Protective Masking On
Leave the protective film in place to help prevent scratching during the cutting process.
Score the Sheet
Using a scribing knife or plastic cutter, score along a straight edge that is firmly held in place. Apply firm, even pressure and draw the blade across the sheet 7–8 times for material that is 3/16″ thick. Ensure each stroke goes cleanly off the edge for the best results.
Snap the Acrylic
Position the sheet with the scribe line just beyond the edge of a table or workbench. Secure the larger side under a straight edge or clamp it down. Protect your hands with a cloth and press sharply downward on the overhanging portion. The acrylic will snap cleanly along the score line.
Smooth the Edges
Use an edge scraper or fine sandpaper to remove any sharp corners or burrs left after the break.
Important Notes:
This method is not suitable for thick acrylic, long cuts, or edges that need to be glued.
For precision work or professional-quality finishes, consider using a saw or laser cutter instead.
