Drilling Acrylic
Drilling acrylic requires the right tools and technique to avoid cracks or chips. For best results, always use drill bits specifically designed for acrylic or plastics. These bits feature a sharper point and a modified cutting angle to reduce stress and prevent the blade from grabbing the material.
Using Standard Drill Bits:
If using a regular twist drill, the cutting edges must be modified—typically by dulling or flattening the point slightly—to prevent it from digging in too aggressively. Unmodified bits can easily cause the acrylic to chip or fracture, especially near the edges.
Pro Tips:
Drill at a moderate speed and apply light, consistent pressure.
Back the acrylic with a scrap piece of wood to avoid blowout as the bit exits.
Keep the protective film on while drilling to minimize surface scratches.
For thick or multiple sheets, step-drilling (starting with a small bit and increasing in size) helps maintain clean holes.
